I waited patiently a short distance ahead for Aki and the others who would be coming with me. Getting Bahir up onto the boulder with the others hadn’t taken too long. After considering the options, I’d found the lowest part of the rock and jumped up with him. The landing jostled him a bit, but we didn’t do any further major damage. The last I saw of him, he was doing his best to look pathetic while Sekeela doted on him. I caught his eye as I was leaving, and he gave me a wink when he thought Sekeela was turned away. From my vantage point, I’d been able to see both the wink and Sekeela rolling her eyes.

I’d expected a larger group to be coming with me, but it was only Aki and seven others. The Kalari were trying to remain calm, but I suspected they were more shaken up about the mysterious trail than they wanted to admit. Some of those staying behind did want to get their magic back, but they didn’t want to leave the most vulnerable of their group alone.

The Kalari were confident the daemons would construct a gateway closer to the spring, so future groups of Kalari would have the opportunity to access the spring. I hadn’t told them yet that if there truly was devourer activity in this realm, the daemons wouldn’t allow the construction of any gateways here.

Since I hadn’t seen any solid evidence of devourers, I’d kept this information to myself. They’d already had enough bad breaks on this trip, I didn’t see any reason to give them more potential bad news. Sekeela likely already knew this anyway since she had been the one to negotiate with the daemons for this trip.

I pursed my lips as I watched Aki leap down from the rock. I was usually much better at keeping myself distant from clients and everyone in general, but I’d started to like the Kalari over the past several weeks. They didn’t want their magic back to gain power or improve their status in the magical community. Instead they wanted to use their gifts to help people. I’d scoffed at their claim at first, centuries of bitterness making me unable to believe they didn’t simply want power.

But they were honest and genuine. They truly did want to help people. It still seemed like such a foreign concept.

“Ready,” Aki said when she reached me. She quickly went over everyone’s names again, somehow knowing that I hadn’t memorized the names of everyone in the group.

I recognized two of them as Bahir’s grandchildren. All of these Kalari were young like Aki, probably in their late teens or early twenties. I wasn’t always the best at telling how old humans were. To them I probably looked like I was only a few years older even though I was actually centuries older. Most shapeshifter species lived for thousands of years, we were similar to the fae and daemons in that regard. Eventually our magic would
